Why I Left the “Work Hard, Play Hard” Mentality Behind

For years, I embraced the “work hard, play hard” mentality. On the outside, it looked, well, fun: long hours, ambitious goals, and weekends filled with dinners, drinks, and distractions. I was booked and busy, making things happen. And sure, the ways that I blew off steam might not be “healthy”… but it was “balanced”…right?

I thought that as long as I was doing a lot, that meant I was successful.

But beneath the surface, I felt increasingly disconnected—from myself, from my purpose, from what actually mattered.

It wasn’t just the exhaustion that got to me. It was the sense that I was chasing something without knowing what I was even chasing. My life felt like a performance I was too tired to keep acting in.

I see a lot of my clients stuck in the same Work Hard, Play Hard trap. They use being busy as a substitute for meaning. They use alcohol, shopping, vacations, or food as a way to numb the subconscious ache they have for more purpose and meaning in their lives.

I have to ask them the same question that I needed to ask myself:
“What am I really striving for?”

That single question cracked open a deeper truth. I didn’t need more achievements or more social plans. I needed more me.

I needed to redefine pleasure in my life. I was chasing pleasure through food, alcohol, and attention because I didn’t allow myself to be satisfied in my life more broadly so I chase real and literal sugar hits as a substitute.

I needed to learn how to nurture self-love, how to slow down, and how to reconnect with my own values.

Now, fulfillment looks different. It’s not about working harder or playing harder. It’s about working wiser and living deeper. It’s about understanding that love and belonging aren’t things you earn—they’re things you cultivate within.

This isn’t a journey with a finish line. But it’s a path I’m grateful to be on every day.
